uPVC Door Repair: Lock, Gearbox and Alignment

A uPVC door that will not lock, has to be lifted and forced, sticks, or draughts around the edges is almost never a door that needs replacing. The fault is nearly always in the mechanism, the cylinder, the hinges or the alignment, and every one of those is a repair. We fix the door you have rather than selling you a new one. Catching a uPVC fault early usually turns a large repair into a small one.

The single most useful thing to know: on a uPVC door the way it fails tells you what is wrong. If you have to lift the handle hard to lock, that is alignment. If the handle lifts but nothing locks, that is the gearbox. We explain both below. For the deep detail on multipoint internals, see door mechanism repair; for the lock and cylinder itself, see door lock repair.

What a uPVC door repair typically costs

Based on 1,008 real lock and door repair jobs completed by Kingdom Locksmith, with each town row from that town's own work. An alignment adjustment or cylinder swap sits near the bottom; a full multipoint mechanism replacement with a brand-specific gearbox sits higher. Ipswich runs dearer than the Midlands towns, honestly because more of the work there is heavier multipoint and composite-door failure rather than a quick adjust. We quote before we start.

Reading the fault: alignment versus gearbox

These are the two failures that bring us out most, and they need different fixes.

  • Door has to be lifted or forced to lock. This is alignment. The door has dropped on its hinges over time, so the locking hooks no longer meet the keeps in the frame. You compensate by lifting and heaving. The fix is realigning the door and adjusting or replacing the hinges and keeps. Caught early it is a small job. Ignored, the strain of forcing it every day wears out and eventually snaps the mechanism, which is where it gets expensive.
  • Handle lifts freely but the door will not lock. This is the gearbox. The multipoint gearbox is the part that, when you lift the handle, drives the hooks, bolts and rollers into the frame. When it fails internally the handle no longer engages anything, so it lifts but nothing throws. That is a mechanism replacement. We identify the gearbox make and model and fit the correct part.

Two symptoms, two very different fixes, and telling them apart on the phone helps us bring the right parts. See our door mechanism repair page for how the multipoint system works in detail, or what replacing a uPVC mechanism actually involves if you want to see the job step by step.

The other common uPVC faults

  • Dropped or worn hinges causing rubbing, sticking and draughts. Adjusted or replaced to restore alignment.
  • Broken or floppy handle where the spindle or spring has worn. A failing handle also stops the mechanism throwing fully.
  • Worn or cheap euro cylinder. Repaired or swapped, and a good moment to upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder if the current one is vulnerable.
  • Misted or cracked double-glazed panel. The sealed unit is replaced with the correct specification without replacing the whole door.
  • Seals and weather strips perished and letting in draughts. Replaced to restore the seal.

Repair now, not a whole new door later

Because uPVC faults compound, alignment strain kills mechanisms, worn hinges cause more drop, the cheapest outcome is usually to catch it early. We will tell you honestly if a door is genuinely beyond repair, which is rare and usually only after serious frame damage. In the ordinary case, a repair restores full function and security for far less than a replacement door.
