Smart Lock Installation: Keyless Entry, Fitted to Your Door

A smart lock, matched to your door and chosen well, gives you keyless entry, time-limited codes for guests or trades, and a record of who came and went. Fitted to the wrong door, or fitted badly, it gives you a lock that jams, drains batteries and lets you down. This page is for anyone considering a smart lock who wants the honest version: whether it suits your door, and when a plain mechanical lock is the smarter buy.

We are locksmiths first. That means we care as much about the physical lock behind the electronics as the app on your phone, because a smart lock is still a lock.

Compatibility is the whole game

The single most important question is what lock your door uses now, because that decides what smart options exist.

uPVC and composite doors with a multipoint mechanism. These lift-to-lock doors are driven by a euro cylinder. The usual smart route is a smart euro cylinder or a retrofit unit that turns the existing cylinder from the inside, keeping the multipoint mechanism as it is. The mechanism and door alignment have to be sound first, or the motor will struggle.

Timber doors with a rim lock (nightlatch). A rim-style smart lock replaces the inside case of a nightlatch, which is one of the cleaner retrofits. The outside can stay keyed or move to a keypad.

Mortice-locked doors. A mortice setup is a different fitting again, and some smart locks simply are not designed for it. Here we are honest about whether a smart lock is even the right tool.

Because of all this, we assess the door before recommending a model. Our step-by-step on installing a smart lock shows what a clean fit looks like, and resetting a smart door lock covers the day-to-day.

When a smart lock is a bad idea

We will happily fit a smart lock. We will also talk you out of one when it is wrong, and here is when:

  • Your door does not close cleanly. A motorised lock fighting a dropped or misaligned door will wear out fast. The door has to be right first.
  • The physical lock underneath is weak. Bolting electronics onto a standard non-anti-snap cylinder does nothing for the attack a burglar will actually try. Fix the physical security first, then add smart if you want it.
  • You only need carer or guest access. For that specific job, a key safe is often simpler, cheaper and needs no batteries.
  • You will not maintain it. Smart locks need firmware updates and battery changes. If that is not you, a good mechanical lock is the honest recommendation.

On the security question generally, our guide can smart door locks be hacked gives the real risks, which are weak passwords and poor upkeep far more than clever remote attacks.

What it costs

Fitting a smart lock is priced as a lock change. These are our real figures, inc VAT, for the fitting. Derby has its own published picture: what smart locks cost in Derby. The lock unit itself is separate and varies widely by model.

Where we fit smart locks

We install smart locks across Coventry, Derby, Colchester, Ipswich, Burton upon Trent, Nottingham and Leamington Spa, and the towns around each. Where a smart cylinder is going into a uPVC door, it is often worth pairing with a lock replacement or an anti-snap upgrade at the same visit.
