A key safe solves a specific problem: how do you let someone into a property when you cannot be there to hand over a key. Fitted to hold, on the right wall, it does that job for years. The catch is that a key safe is only as good as the box you buy and the way it is fixed to the wall. A poor safe screwed on with the fixings from the packet can be prised off in seconds. A properly rated safe, anchored into solid masonry in a sensible position, does its job for years. We fit the second kind.

Getting the specification right

Not all key safes are equal, and the difference is not the price sticker.

Police-preferred specification. The mark to look for is a key safe that has passed independent attack testing, such as one certified under the Secured by Design scheme, the UK police-backed standard for security products. A safe carrying that level of testing resists the prying, hammering and pulling that a burglar will try. A generic key safe with no rating has not been through any of that.

The fixing is the safe. Manufacturers rate a safe assuming it is anchored correctly. We fix into solid brick or masonry with the right anchors for the substrate, not into render, mortar joints or a hollow wall. A perfectly good safe fitted into weak wall is not secure.

Are key safes actually secure, or do they just help burglars?

A cheap key safe fixed with the screws in the box is a liability. A properly rated key safe, fitted to the right spec on solid brickwork with the correct anchors, is a different thing. Look for a police-preferred specification such as one tested under the Secured by Design scheme, which puts a key safe through real attack testing.
