Door Latch Stuck in the Open Position

Door Latch Stuck in the Open Position

A latch that stays retracted inside the door cannot hold the door closed normally. Possible causes include a night-latch hold-back control, resistance inside the latch, a handle or follower fault, or damage within the latch or connected lock case.

Start with the door open. Do not force the handle or insert tools into the mechanism.

Check for a hold-back control

Some night latches have a snib or hold-back feature that deliberately keeps the latch retracted. Check the manufacturer's normal operating position and release it if it has been engaged. Not every lock has this feature, so do not move unfamiliar controls by force.

Compare the handle and latch movement

Press and release the latch gently with the door open, then operate the handle normally. Observe whether:

  • the latch returns by itself;
  • the handle returns to its normal position;
  • the latch binds partway through its movement;
  • the handle moves without controlling the latch; or
  • the problem changes when the door is closed.

If the latch works open but catches closed, alignment may be contributing. If it remains retracted with the door open, the latch, handle connection, follower or lock case needs closer inspection.

What can cause the symptom?

ObservationPossible area to inspect
Snib or hold-back control engagedNormal control position
Handle remains downHandle springs, spindle, follower or connected case
Latch does not return when pressedLatch assembly or internal resistance
Works open but not closedDoor and keep alignment
Latch or handle feels looseFixings, wear or damage

The same symptom can have more than one cause. Do not select a replacement part from the table alone.

Safe steps

  1. Keep the door open while checking operation.
  2. Confirm any hold-back control is in its normal position.
  3. Check accessible fixings for obvious looseness.
  4. Clean only visible surface contamination.
  5. Use maintenance products only where the exact product maker recommends them.
  6. Stop if the latch does not return or the handle behaves abnormally.

Do not dismantle an unfamiliar lock while the door is closed. Removing handles or connected parts can make access more difficult.

When repair is urgent

An external door that will not stay closed or secure should be dealt with promptly. The appropriate repair might involve a fitting, handle component, latch, cylinder, lock case or wider multipoint mechanism. The door and frame should also be checked where alignment is suspected.

A door mechanism repair assessment can establish the cause and compatible options. The final price is confirmed after inspection and before chargeable work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my latch not spring back out?

A hold-back control may be engaged, or movement may be restricted within the latch, handle connection or lock case. Test it with the door open and check normal controls before assuming one part has failed.

Does a stuck-open latch always need replacing?

No. Loose fittings, controls or alignment may sometimes be involved. Internal wear or damage can make replacement the practical option, but diagnosis comes first.

Is the door secure if the latch stays open?

The latch cannot hold the door closed normally while retracted. Other locking points may differ by doorset, but an external door that cannot close or secure reliably should not be left unattended.

If the latch retracts but sticks while you operate the handle, see Door Latch Sticking and Won't Release. For urgent help, request a callback.
