Hard to Insert the Key Into the Lock
A key that catches before it reaches its normal depth may be damaged, incorrectly cut or meeting resistance at the keyway. Stop when the key meets firm resistance. Forcing it can bend or snap the key and may damage the cylinder entrance.

Try an undamaged spare
An undamaged spare is the quickest comparison. If the spare enters normally, inspect the everyday key for a bend, twist, crack, burr or unusual wear. Do not file, straighten or reshape it yourself. A replacement should be cut from a reliable original or the correct key information, not copied repeatedly from a worn key.
If several correct keys stop at the same point, the obstruction or damage is more likely to be in the keyway or cylinder.
Possible causes
- a bent, twisted or damaged key;
- a rough or inaccurate key cut;
- the wrong key or key profile;
- visible contamination around the keyway entrance;
- a fragment or foreign object inside the keyway;
- corrosion or damage at the cylinder entrance; or
- wear or damage inside the cylinder.
These possibilities cannot always be distinguished from outside. Avoid pushing tools, wire or another key against a suspected obstruction.

- Stop when the key reaches firm resistance.
- Confirm it is the correct key.
- Compare an undamaged spare.
- Inspect the problem key in good light.
- Look at the keyway entrance without inserting tools.
- Follow the exact cylinder manufacturer's maintenance instructions where the product is known.
- Arrange inspection if several correct keys fail in the same way.
Do not automatically add oil, graphite, silicone or another spray to an unknown cylinder. Product guidance varies, and an unsuitable or mixed product can retain contamination.
Broken fragments and foreign objects
A snapped key tip or foreign material can prevent another key from entering. Do not push the obstruction deeper. A locksmith can assess whether it can be extracted without damaging the cylinder and whether the cylinder remains serviceable afterward.
