Door Lock Repair

A door lock that is stiff, jammed, loose or barely turning does not always need replacing. Often the fix is a clean, an adjustment, a new spring or a worn part swapped out, at a fraction of the cost of a new lock. This page is for repairing the lock and its immediate hardware across any door type: timber, uPVC or composite. Our first move is always to work out what has actually failed, not to sell you the most expensive answer.

If the problem is deeper in the door, the uPVC door itself or the multipoint mechanism behind the handle, those pages go into detail. If the lock genuinely cannot be saved, see lock replacement.

What a lock repair typically costs

Based on 1,008 real lock repair jobs completed by Kingdom Locksmith, with each town row drawn from that town's own jobs. A simple clean and adjust of a stiff lock sits near the bottom; a mechanism or gearbox repair with parts sits higher. Ipswich runs noticeably dearer, and we are straight about why: the work there leans toward tougher multipoint and composite-door faults rather than quick cylinder fixes. We quote before we start.

Common faults, and what we do

  • Stiff or hard to turn. Usually dirt, dried grease, or a door that has dropped enough to bind the lock. We clean, lubricate correctly, and check alignment. Forcing a stiff key is the fastest way to snap it, so this is worth doing early.
  • Key turns but will not lock or unlock. The cylinder cam or the mechanism behind it may have failed. We diagnose whether it is the lock or the multipoint mechanism.
  • Loose, drooping or spinning handle. Often a worn spindle or a broken handle spring. A failing handle stops the multipoint lock throwing fully, so it is a security issue as well as an annoyance. If yours is a push-button handle that turns but will not lock, that specific fault has its own guide.
  • Worn cylinder, sticking key. Where the barrel is worn but sound, cleaning and adjustment can restore it. Where it is past saving, we replace just the cylinder.
  • Damaged after attempted forced entry. We assess whether the lock can be made secure again or whether it needs replacing to restore proper security.

How the job actually goes

We start with diagnosis, because the wrong fix wastes your money. The locksmith operates the lock, checks the door alignment, and finds the real fault before touching anything. Many "broken locks" are actually a door dropped by a few millimetres, throwing the cylinder or the keeps out of line, which is corrected by adjustment rather than a new lock. A Yale night latch that no longer catches is usually this same alignment problem rather than a failed lock. Where a part has genuinely failed, we replace that part. Where the lock cannot be made properly secure again, we tell you plainly and quote a replacement instead of dressing up a fix that will not hold.

Repair or replace: the honest test

The question is whether a repair restores full security. Stiff mechanisms, worn springs, loose handles and dropped doors are usually repairs. Cracked lock bodies, defeated cylinders after a break-in, and locks that no longer meet your insurance standard are usually replacements. We give you the cheaper route whenever it genuinely leaves the door secure.
