Locked Out? Locked Out Service, Non-Destructive Entry
Standing on your own doorstep without a way into your house is a horrible feeling, and the fear that a locksmith will smash the lock and hand you a bill for a new one makes it worse. That is not how a good opening works. For the large majority of house lockouts we get you back inside without damaging the lock or the door, so you keep the lock you already own and only pay for the opening.
This page is specifically about being shut out of your home. If you have a wider urgent problem, a break-in, a snapped key, a door that will not lock at night, the emergency support emergency locksmith page covers the full range. Not sure which you need? If you simply cannot get in and the lock is otherwise fine, you are in the right place.
What a house opening typically costs
Based on 595 real locked-out openings completed by Kingdom Locksmith, with each town row drawn from that town's own jobs. A clean non-destructive opening sits toward the lower figures. The price rises when the lock is a high-security cylinder, when it turns out to be broken and needs replacing, or when the job is deep in the night. We give you the number before we set off.
Non-destructive entry, explained
Non-destructive entry means opening the lock using its own mechanism rather than breaking it. Which technique we use is decided by the lock on your door:
- Night latch (Yale-type rim lock). Often opened with a slip or bypass tool that works the latch without touching the cylinder. The lock is untouched and keeps working.
- Euro cylinder (most uPVC and composite doors). Usually picked open, so the pins are set exactly as your key would set them, or the cylinder is manipulated. Nothing is replaced.
- Mortice lock (common on wooden doors, often BS3621 on insured front doors). Picked or curtain-picked where possible. A five-lever British Standard mortice is designed to resist this, which is the point of it, so it takes longer and skill matters. If the mortice has seized rather than locked you out, there are safe checks to try first.
- Letterbox and through-the-door tools. Where the door has a reachable internal thumbturn or handle and it is lawful to use them, a letterbox tool can release the door without touching the lock at all. We only use these where the door design and the law allow.
Drilling is the last resort, not the first move. We drill only when the lock is already broken, when a snapped key has jammed the mechanism, or when a high-security cylinder genuinely cannot be picked in a sensible time. If a key has just snapped in your door, what to do before you call can save the lock. If drilling is needed we tell you first, and we fit a new cylinder so you leave locked up properly.
After we are in
Once you are back inside, the job is not automatically over. If the lock is old, stiff, or was the reason you got locked out, we will say so and offer options: a like-for-like lock replacement, an upgrade to an anti-snap cylinder, or simply cutting you a spare so it does not happen again. A key safe is a cheap way to stop the next lockout before it starts. None of this is pushed on you; you asked us to get you in, and that is the job.
Worth a read: how non-destructive entry works, what to do the moment you are locked out, a locked-out checklist, and what to do when a key is stuck in the lock.
