What a lock change typically costs

Based on 222 real lock change jobs completed by Kingdom Locksmith, with town rows taken from that town's own jobs. The figure depends on the lock type and the hardware you choose: a single euro cylinder swap sits near the bottom, while a full front-door upgrade to anti-snap cylinders and British Standard mortice locks sits higher. We quote the parts and the fitting before we start.

Cylinder or whole lock: what actually gets replaced

The right job depends on your door.

• uPVC and composite doors run a euro cylinder inside a multipoint mechanism. Nine times out of ten the cylinder is the only part that needs changing, which is why upgrading to a stronger, anti-snap cylinder is quick and affordable. The mechanism itself is only replaced if it has failed, which is a door mechanism repair job.
• Wooden doors usually carry a mortice lock (morticed into the edge of the door) and often a night latch on the face. A mortice deadlock is replaced as a whole lock body. For insurance, a five-lever BS3621 kitemarked mortice is the usual target.
• Night latches (Yale-type). The rim cylinder can be changed on its own, or the whole latch replaced if it is worn or you want a deadlocking or auto-deadlocking version.

Fitting to the right standard

Two standards matter most for a UK home:

• BS3621 is the British Standard your insurer typically wants on final exit doors, shown by the kitemark on the lock. On a wooden door that means a proper five-lever mortice deadlock, not a cheap three-lever.
• Anti-snap for euro cylinders. A plain euro cylinder can be snapped in seconds. We fit cylinders rated TS007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond (SS312), which are engineered to break away safely and keep the door locked. If your current cylinder sticks out past the handle, that overhang is exactly what a snapping attack grips, and it is worth dealing with.

When to change and when to keep

Changing every lock the day you move in is sensible: you do not know who else holds a key. After a burglary or a lost set of keys with an address attached, change or rekey without hesitation. If you are weighing doing it yourself, DIY against a locksmith on a house lock change sets out where the DIY route usually costs more than it saves. But a lock that is simply stiff in cold weather may only need cleaning, lubricating and adjusting, which is a repair rather than a replacement. We will always tell you the cheaper honest option.
